Your first pole dance class: what to expect and how to prepare

Students in a pole dance class practising a move on the pole

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably been toying with the idea of signing up for a pole dance class for weeks. It’s one of those decisions people think about the most and regret the least: almost everyone who tries it, stays. But we understand first-time nerves, so let’s clear up your questions before you step into the studio.

You don’t need any experience

Let’s get this straight from the start: nobody arrives at their first class already knowing how to do anything, and that’s perfectly fine. Beginner classes are designed to start from zero, building strength, basic technique and confidence on the pole little by little. There’s no “advanced” crowd giving you funny looks — everyone started exactly where you are now.

What if I don’t have strong arms?

It’s the question we hear most, and the answer surprises almost everyone: strength is built through practice, it isn’t an entry requirement. Pole dance works your whole body progressively; the first classes focus on technique and foundations, and strength comes naturally with consistency, session by session.

What to bring to your first class

  • Clothes that leave skin uncovered on your arms and legs (short shorts, a top or fitted T-shirt) — you need skin contact to grip the pole; in long clothes you’d slip
  • No body lotion or oils on the day of your class, for the same grip reason
  • Bare feet or non-slip socks — most classes are done without shoes
  • A hair tie, so your hair doesn’t get in the way during spins
  • Water, although every studio has a place to refill

What the first class is really like

It starts with a general warm-up, followed by technique work and getting to know the pole: basic spins, assisted climbs and floor exercises. The first day isn’t about “pulling off a spectacular move”, but about losing your fear of the metal, understanding how your body grips and enjoying the process. The class ends with stretching, which you’ll especially appreciate in the first few weeks.

What if I feel self-conscious?

That’s completely normal, and it disappears sooner than you think. Classes are taught in small groups, with a supportive atmosphere where everyone understands exactly what you’re going through, because they’ve been there too. That first-day shyness usually lasts a couple of classes at most.

Where can I take my first class?

At Glow Up Pole Madrid we have three studios — Legazpi, Ventas and Las Tablas — so you can choose the one that suits you best, whether it’s the closest or has the best schedule. And if you want to mix them later on, you can: your pass works at any of our studios.
